My love for dogs goes back as long as I can remember. My parents raised German Shepard Dogs while we were growing up. The above picture is of my two sisters, Teresa on the far left, Terri in the middle, and me, Lourie, holding Shadow. We grew up just outside of Newbury Park in Southern California. This photo was taken in 1962. |
This is a photo of Tsar and myself after a Lend-A-Heart Pet Therapy Picnic. Tsar was a very good therapy dog. He loved kids and did numerous tricks. Including his famous "nobbin" when he put his great head on your lap and pretended to go to sleep, after he said his prayers. This wonderful boy did everything I ever asked him to do for me, including herding, obedience, tracking, and carting. Tsar had the patience of a saint, he never loss his composure, even in difficult circumstances in our therapy work, but sheep are another matter. Tsar loved herding, and was good at it, we had alot of fun learning what came natural to him. I'll never forget his big heart. |
Tsar getting his first AHBA leg under Linda Rorem, and yours truly holding the crook. Linda is a judge and member of the Northern California Shetland Sheepdog Herding Association. Tsar never met a ewe he couldn't handle. I saw him chest butt sheep to move them, and was not above a little wool grabbing if a ewe was being difficult. |
At the annual Scottish Games in Woodland in 1997. Tsar was a part of the parade, pulling Heather and Nova as a puppy. The first Sheltie is Charm, and the blue laying down is Sky, both now at the bridge, with Tsar watching over them. |
This is Tsar as a two year old just before his therapy dog test in 1994. Tsar retired from therapy and performance due to hip and spinal problems, although he continued to help us train Sheltie puppies, when we had them, and he helped with Sheltie rescues. |
My first Sheltie came to my home in 1979. Daisy was a retired brood bitch. She was a sable/white, and also had obtained obedience titles. This was beginning of my love for the Shetland Sheepdog. The Roma kennel name came about due my interest in Roman, and Medieval history.
I have been a member of various clubs since the mid 1980's, including the Sacramento Dog Training Club, the Truckee Meadows Dog Training Club (in Reno), the Sacramento Valley Shetland Sheepdog Club (since 1995), the White Shetland Sheepdog Association, and Lend-A-Heart Pet Therapy. I still train in obedience, still love herding, but my main interest is conformation, which includes the International Shows. |
