Sheltie History

Foundation of the Shetland Sheepdog Breed
More than one breed makes up the present day Shetland Sheepdog, including the Border Collie, the Rough Collie, the Scotch Collie, Iceland Dog, the Pomeranian, the King Charles Spaniel, and various Spitz breeds.

The Sheltie Homeland
Early Shelties
The Shetland Islands are a chain of 100 + islands off the Scottish mainland.  The islands are ruggedly beautiful, with sparse  vegetation, and almost constant winds.  Great storms rage across the islands and like every other living thing the conditions produced animals in diminutive size, including cattle, ponies, sheep and the so called "toonie" dogs, the Shetland Sheepdog's ancestors.

From the island of Fetler came the early and most highly regarded of the Shetland Sheepdogs, just after the turn of the 20th century.  James A. Loggie's dogs are the foundation of the breed.  Lerwick Hakon, Lerwick Jarl, Lerwick Olaf and Zesta where shown  in 1913 at Croft's Show in London, England.  Edward R. Stettinius owner of Kilvarock Lassie, a sable & white (DOB 10/11/1922), is one of the most famous bloodlines in the U.K.  Bred in Scotland by Mr. Cusin and sold (imported to the US) by Catherine E. Coleman of Williamsburg, MA.
